Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the sleep pattern according to personality type and depression, in order to present basic information regarding sleep and health promotion.
The sample consisted of 177 adult between the ages of 20 and 59 years. Data collection was done from May to June in 1999. The questionnaire included self-reported sleep pattern, personality scale, and beck depression inventory. Analysis of data was done by use of x 2, t-test, ANOVA.
The result of this study were summarized as follows :
1 Most of subjects were reported to sleep length 405.93min, time of sleep 24.06hour, sleep latency 14.31min, and time of awakening 6.83hour. Forty six point three percent of the subjects stated that they have irregular sleep habit.
2 Regarding quality of sleep, discontent 20.3%, sleep disorder 67.2%. Complain of sleep 43.5%, difficulty for daytime sleepiness 72.3% were reported.
3 Significant differences between type A personality and type B personality were found for the following variables: sleep habit, time of sleep, time of awakening, sleep latency. Type A personality was later of time of sleep & time of awakening and shorter of sleep latency than type B personality. Satisfaction of sleep and condition of awakening were showed significant difference according to the personality type. Type A personality were more discontent of sleep and more complain of sleep than type B personality.
4 Significant differences between depression group and normal group were found for the following variables: time of awakening, sleep latency, sleep length. Depression group was longer of sleep length and sleep latency, and later of time of awakening than normal group. Depression group was more complain of daytime sleepiness and condition of awakening. From the results of this study, it can concluded that the adult in the community do have some sleep impairment, but do not practice adequate strategies for better sleep. Further researches are needed to explore behavioral characteristic and life style in sleep impairment group, to develop nursing intervention.
